We tried it first in a room with thin shades on a very sunny day, so the room wasn't very dark -- it did well. I agree with some minor drawbacks mentioned by others. The remote has no backlighting, so it's difficult to use in a really dark room. The focus mechanism is a little too touchy -- I had to fiddle a bit to get the focus right.

And the on-screen interface to run a slideshow directly off a memory stick with multiple folders was a little awkward. However, as another reviewer suggested, if you just put all the photos in the root directory folder of the memory stick, then the interface isn't an issue. We had waited a long time to buy a projector, and are very pleased with the value of this one. The sort order of the files is peculiar, so the slideshow may not run in the desired sequence.

Slide1, Slide2, Slide However, the GP1 shows the files in this sequence instead: Slide15, Slide Slide40, Slide1, Slide Slide14 This makes the feature of creating a usable slideshow just on the memory stick pretty unusable. I am really impressed with the BenQ GP1. Interaction takes a bit of getting used to, but, for the most part it's logical. You can use the remote easy , or the touch-sensitive controls on the top of the box a bit more challenging.

This is NOT a pico projector; it's a little larger not excessively so ; it is MUCH brighter than most pico's at lumens, at maximum brightness. The projector puts out enough light to be viewed comfortably in a darkened room total darkness is NOT a requirement. The GP1 also has keystone correction, which is very effective, to correct for tilt of the projector beam. It also has color correction in case of projecting onto a colored surface, such as a wall - I've not played with this, although it seems to be a somewhat desirable feature.

The internal sound amp, at 2 watts, is not going to impress I use an external amp. I've only tried it with a flash drive; other users report that it functions equally well with an external USB hard drive presumably the GP1 supplies enough juice to fire up the drive , and such external USB devices as cameras, phones, MP All is not perfect in BenQ land. Just a few minor gripes: - The case provided will only house the projector no place for cables, media The unit draws 60W so it may not be a huge plus, except in an emergency.

I think it was a tactical error NOT to go with a standardized connector although there may be licensing issues and associated cost, as there would also be for the Apple cabling.

Overall I just have to give this device 5 stars - it's definitely a cut-above for it's particular niche in the marketplace. Size and weight are big considerations as I will be traveling with it frequently. This unit and it's giant power cord easily fit with my laptop and all my other stuff into my laptop case and didn't cause a stir going through security. Even so, I wish I had gone with the pico unit. The reason I went with this unit is because it has more lumens than the brightest pico unit I could find.

The room did need to be darkened to see the pictures well, which can make it difficult for people to take notes during the presentation. The unit was simple to set up and worked perfectly with my Dell laptop.

BenQ Joybee GP1 Mini Projector review

All of these features are excellent in this time when more and more consumers want to make their purchase count. Benq provides the Joybee GP1 user a great safety manual where they note some important safety issues. Lastly, they recommend not stacking any items on top of the projector and keeping the projector out of humid places. With this feature you might be able to leave that projector screen at home and embrace the colored walls you have to work with. That is quite a bonus if you have one less piece of equipment to haul with you to a presentation. To go along with the wall color correction technology is the automatic keystone adjustment which allows you to change the position and orientation of your image on the wall.

In an interesting twist though, BenQ is pitching this device squarely at the family. The big question though: Will great-grandma be able to make heads or tails of the gear when it shows up on her doorstep? We imagine less tech-savvy folks will need at least some handholding to get started—along with a very dark room and a very white wall, if not a bona fide projector screen—although the device is pretty easy to figure out. If all the light is directed to the heatsink, the projected image is black; toggling between the two states creates a grayscale, and shades of color are produced by using red, green, and blue LEDs as light sources.
