It occupies much of West Texas , parts of the middle and lower Rio Grande Valley and the lower Pecos Valley in New Mexico , and a portion of southeastern Arizona , as well as the central and northern portions of the Mexican Plateau. It is bordered on the west by the extensive Sierra Madre Occidental range, along with northwestern lowlands of the Sierra Madre Oriental range. These create " sky islands " of cooler, wetter, climates adjacent to, or within the desert, and such elevated areas have both coniferous and broadleaf woodlands, including forests along drainages and favored exposures. Though not technically within this ecoregion, the southernmost parts of the Sandia—Manzano Mountains are near the northernmost points of the region.

The endemic element of the Chihuahuan Desert vascular flora. Mex [online]. ISSN Endemism is a common phenomenon in arid regions. A database was set up summarizing the information on the restricted species from the DCH.
The following types of endemism were considered: 1 endemics which are known from the study region only, 2 quasi-endemics with distribution mainly in the DCH and some populations in the neighboring areas, 3 micro-endemics which are restricted to one location, and 4 endemics of non-arid habitats in the area.
A total of taxa including species, additional infraspecific taxa and hybrids were determined to be endemics or quasi-endemics, representing Of this, are endemics, quasi-endemics, micro-endemics and are from non arid habitats.
The families with the most endemics are Cactaceae species , Asteraceae , Boraginaceae 34 and Brassicaceae 31 , that represent The genera with the highest taxa numbers are Coryphantha 24 , Echinocereus 14 , Mammillaria 15 , Turbinicarpus Nine genera are exclusive to the DCH. The dominant biological forms are perennial herbs and shrubs, frequently distributed in the xeric shrubland.
The endemic distribution is heterogeneous, with a density index of 0. Coahuila has the largest number of elements Services on Demand Journal. Similars in SciELO. Background and Aims: Endemism is a common phenomenon in arid regions.
